Amy Doyo
Amy Doyo is an Asian-American Contemporary artist who draws inspiration from discoveries in space and nature and portrays the unavoidable journey of finding her place in her community, society, and the world. Amy’s journey as an artist began during her homeschool years, which allowed time to cultivate her passion for painting and drawing.
Amy is a Ryman Arts alumni and has received her Associate’s Degree in Studio Arts from Rio Hondo College. She has received the Outstanding Student Award in Painting and Drawing from Rio Hondo’s Division of Arts & Cultural Programs for two consecutive years. Her work has been shown in Rio Hondo Student Shows. Amy’s artwork was also featured by “Two Weeks in June,” a nonprofit organization focused on promoting mental health through creative media and gallery events.
Currently, Amy is now studying at the California State University of Long Beach and was accepted into the Bachelors of Fine Arts program of Drawing and Painting. In 2021, her work was featured in the CSULB annual School of Arts INSIGHTS exhibition. Amy works in the Arts Division at Rio Hondo College as a Student Success Coach.
Living through a pandemic and struggling to adjust to society’s new norms has dramatically changed the art process and my motivation. These paintings’ themes were unplanned as I tried to make sense of the chaos happening in my world. The art process was interrupted by my living conditions and the societal shifts happening. Lack of space, isolation, and social stress impacted motivation and inspiration. Like other art students, the trauma we experienced and lack of resources required us to cultivate grit in order to push through creative blocks.
This series had an emotional response and less structure. Stepping away from my usual mapped-out process of painting and drawing, this group of paintings had a dynamic process that evolved. Fire, which was my visual reference for the series, is wild, abstract, less structured, and required me to mimic a more natural movement.
